These are trinkets I created for friends and colleagues in the Department of Information Studies at the University of Tampere. The rocks are known to landscapers as Mexican River Stones. The words are Finnish and English terms in the field of information studies, as well as names of the research groups active in the department. Photos by Harri Laitinen.

At Tampere, on November 12th, I participated in the University's "Moonlight Photography" contest, as a member of the team "Lumen." We had 6 hours to take photographs related to 6 clues. The experience is described here. It was a cold but fun night, and Lumen won the competition.

Bike Crash Photos
In my 20s I was a competitive, licensed bicycle racer. I survived several crashes, which are inevitable in this dangerous sport.
This crash occurred in August 1988, during a flat, fast-paced criterium in Newton, Massachusetts. The two racers ahead of me locked handlebars and I went down in their aftermath. After stitches across my eyebrow and a few days of rest I was back on the bike.
Photos are by my brother, Erik Hartel, who was also in the race.
