ABSTRACT

In 1999 Howard D. White made a call to action for "Scientist-Poets" to synthesize ideas and oeuvres within the "centrifugal" literature of LIS. As a response, this presentation surveys the work of Marcia J. Bates. Seven of Bates' seminal papers are reviewed and essential qualities of her thinking are described. In the spirit of a "Scientist-Poet," Bates' ideas are cast within the metaphor of "Castles and Inverted Castles" which are located at different scopes of the LIS discipline. The presentation provides one vivid interpretation of Bates' work and also celebrates its importance to the field.
